Description:Costume design is the art of telling a story through clothing. Before an actor speaks, the audience has already formed impressions through color, silhouette, texture, movement, and historical style. In this studio class, students will learn the artistic and practical foundations of theatrical costume design while developing the observational skills that distinguish thoughtful designers.
Using professional costume design texts, students will explore how garments reveal character, support dramatic storytelling, and contribute to the visual language of the stage. Through research, sketching, fabric studies, rendering, patterning, and introductory construction, students will design costumes inspired by literature, history, mythology, and the theatre.
Rather than focusing solely on sewing techniques, the course cultivates the designer’s eye—teaching students to make intentional artistic choices that communicate personality, culture, status, and emotion.
The semester concludes with a portfolio exhibition featuring original costume renderings, fabric boards, research, and one completed costume or costume element.
